Because of panic-buying, it has become hard to buy many items in supermarkets across the country, meaning not everyone has been able to buy the essentials. However, we have some advice on getting the supplies you need and helping others to do the same.
Production of essential goods – including food, milk, toilet roll and soap – is still very strong, and is very unlikely to decrease in the coming months. Supermarkets are doing everything they can to ensure everybody gets the basic supplies they need, but this is only possible if we all do our bit.
Do not buy more than you need. There is enough food, milk, toilet roll and soap for everyone, as long as we all shop sensibly.
Companies/charities selling and providing food
We’ve compiled several lists of companies & charities providing/selling food. Please note, these lists are constantly updating.
Considerate shopping
During this time of uncertainty, it is not hard to see why many people want to protect their family and buy supplies to last weeks or months into the future. However, supermarkets simply cannot produce enough supplies to sell this much to so many people, which sadly means that many will miss out. Even sadder still, it is generally the elderly, the vulnerable and NHS staff who are most likely to lose out.
Here are some simple ways you can shop considerately:
- Only buy what you’ll need for the next few days in one shop. The shops will still be open this time next week!
- You probably need less loo roll than you realise. On average, you are only likely to need 1-2 rolls per person, per week. You can use this snazzy loo roll calculator for a tailored estimate!
- Only buy things you’ll actually use. If you don’t need it, don’t buy it.
- Use ‘scan & go’ apps (most supermarkets have one) or scanner machines to avoid queues.
Priority hours for elderly & vulnerable shoppers
Many supermarkets are holding priority hours for shoppers over 70, and those with health conditions.
Some charities & churches are volunteering to help supermarkets run these hours. If you require assistance during one of these hours, keep an eye out for volunteers wearing high-vis jackets, who will be happy to help you.
The following supermarkets are holding priority hours:
- Tesco: 9-10am Monday, Wednesday, Friday
- Sainsbury’s: 7:30-8am Monday-Saturday (NHS); 8-9am Monday, Wednesday, Friday (elderly/vulnerable)
- Waitrose: First hour of opening every day
- Marks & Spencer: First hour of opening every day
Please contact us if you know of other stores in Weston-super-Mare offering priority hours.
Finding supplies when shops are sold out
Within an hour or two of opening, many shops are sadly selling out of certain products, including loo roll, bread and frozen/canned food. However, there are several other places you can try to get these items:
- Often smaller stores (e.g. Tesco Express, Sainsbury’s Local, etc) are stocked for a little longer than the bigger stores.
- Local bakeries, butchers, and greengrocers often have more stock throughout the day. You’d also be helping to support local business during an uncertain period, which is great for your local area.
- Most restaurants/takeaways and some pubs are still offering their takeaway & delivery services.
- Lots of corporate/events caterers have had their events cancelled, so have lots of stock left over. They are offering free delivery & cheap prices.
- If you are in desperate need or can’t afford the above options, you can contact a food bank or local charity who can supply those most in need with free food.
